Horace Mitchell, Director of European Telework Online speaks out:
I think there is work for people who want to work from home and there will be a lot more in future as companies use the technologies more and get more used to the idea of teleworking. But a high proportion of fully home based work offers will be contract work not employment.

"Employed" teleworkers will mainly be people who spend some time at home and some time at the employer's premises. When an employer recruits for most kinds of work they want to see the new worker a lot to get to know them and so that they can get into the culture of the company, learn the ropes etc - then new workers can "graduate" to teleworking, if they and the nature of their work make that appropriate. This kind of "partial teleworking" applies to a very wide range of jobs.

But the types of work that best fit full time home based also happen to be the types that also fit contracting out, temporary staff, etc. So if you seek work "as a teleworker" it's wise to either be prepared to apply for non-telework jobs and try to graduate to teleworking, or to be prepared to accept fairly "casual" kinds of work as a contractor not an employee.

I agree with all the warnings here about scams and requests for money - if someone really wants you to work for them they should offer you dosh not the other way round! Keep up the good work . . .
