What is homeworking?
Back to Main Index

  Self-employed, outworker, teleworker...?
  • Self-employed: most people would fall into this category and either provide a product or service from home such as a web publisher, CV consultant or dressmaker; or use their home as a base such as a plumber, market stall holder or musician. Free-lance essentially means being self-employed but offering an existing skill (e.g. architect, editor).

  • Outworkers: are usually skilled piece-workers and contract packers who are paid to carry out a certain amount of work at their home.

  • Teleworkers are usually employees using technology installed at home by their employers to enable them to do their job from home and keep in touch with other teleworkers. Teleworkers also include people who are employed out and about, for instance gas meter readers, telecoms engineers etc.
