Case Study written 1999

 Q
What do you do?
 A
I am a residential window cleaner and have been in business from my home for more than a year. Although I do run the operation from my residence I spend most of my time at the customers home and out advertising.

 Q
Where do you work at home?
 A
At first I had my own work space but with three kids it all blended together quickly.

 Q
Do you manage to keep your work and home life separate?
 A
No, it is absolutely impossible to work at home and keep the two separate.

 Q
What is the best thing about working from home?
 A
Working from home allows me to have more control over my working environment.

 Q
What are the negative points about working at home?
 A
Nobody there to tell you to stop goofing off and get busy. Seriously, you are your own boss so you never tell yourself to go out and work hard. When first starting out that is a very important thing to do.

 Q
What was the deciding factor to help you to decide to work from home?
 A
I simply had to. One day I realized that with three kids and no college degree that pizza delivery was not going to pay the few bills I had.

 Q
How do you cope with distractions at home?
 A
I holler, "Be quiet, I am on the phone with a customer". Compared to the work place, I get to make sure my kids listen.

 Q
What two pieces of advice would you suggest to someone considering working from home?
 A
Find a real need based, simple, honest and part time business to start. If it has been done for at least a hundred years there is no reason you will not be successful. If you care about the customer they will support your business. There is always room for another customer friendly home based business.

 Q
Does your homeworking pay the bills?
 A
Yes, it pays all of the bills. The key is not to have any. Window cleaning gives you the opportunity to run a business with low overheads. If you want a fax machine and a limo, start a different business.

 Q
How did you manage financially when you first started working at home?
 A
Pizza delivery runs at night and window cleaning is a day thing. I worked both part time until I built up enough self confidence to focus just on my business. The window cleaning money was extra at first and then not long after the pizza money was.

 Q
What sort of work did you do before you worked at home?
 A
As you well know I delivered pizza. What you do not know is that this was not my first attempt at a home based business. I tried painting, grocery delivery, amway and I even joined a pyramid scam by accident. My point is do not give up and do the research you need to succeed.

 Q
How do you manage your time?
 A
Honestly, not very well. I could spend more time advertising and keeping the books. I am well organized but not motivated. I have never made this much money before and once I was sure of myself and paying the bills I went into cruise control.

 Q
How do you cope with the isolation of working at home?
 A
Very well! I never liked most of the people I worked with and just loved the customers. Now I work with who I want and they are my customers to take care of.

 Q
Anything else you feel needs to be said?
 A
Yes, there is no need to find the latest and the greatest MLM plan out there. For your first business start with a time tested everyone started out doing it no brainier. If you want to be different and try something new, Baskin Robbins has 31 flavours. Use common sense, time + work = money. If they tell you it will not take up your time and there is no work involved you can bet it will = no money !!!

Thank you Marcus for sharing!
Good luck to Marcus who is branching out and selling the "Step by step to building your own successful home based window cleaning business".
