| The Facts from the One and Only Network
- There are three different affiliate programmes to choose from:
- One & Only Internet Personals, billed as the largest matchmaking site on the web.
Customers can place and view personal ads for free, but must become a member in order to reply to ads. Membership is from one to twelve months costing from $24.95 [about £15] to $7.95 [about £4.80] per month. As an affiliate, you receive 15%, or $3.75 [about £2.25] for each monthly signup, to $1.19 [70p] per month for an annual sign-up (totalling 12 months x $1.19 = $14.28 [about £8.65]).
- Alternative Connections, catering to a younger "non-mainstream" audience.

- Opportunity Plus, promoted as the largest two-tier referral programme on the Internet.
If you find other Webmasters to join the affiliate programme, you will receive 33% of their earnings. For example, if you refer a new webmaster to the One & Only Network associates programme, and they earn $910 (about £550) for subscriptions sold, you will receive a check for $300 (£180). This referral fee is paid on both new and renewing subscriptions.
- Checks (in US Dollars) are mailed monthly, regardless of the amount.
- Features a comprehensive statistics report of your earnings.
- Customization features allow you to create a private label service with your own creative touch.

A Case Study
- It takes only about 15 minutes to sign-up with the One and Only Network (you can sign-up here). After selecting the "Become an Associate" link, you'll be asked to:
- Select the programme you'd like to join (ie., One and Only Internet Personals, and/or, Alternative Connections). You automatically join the Opportunity Plus Referral programme.
- Provide: (a) a contact name (b) password (c) to whom checks are made payable (d) SSN / TAXID (US only) (e) a phone number.
- Specify (a) the Web address of the Web site that will promote the service (b) the name of your page (c) an email address.
- And that's it. You'll get piece of HTML code (which includes your own account number) to copy and paste into your Web page. This includes a logo and link to One and Only, but if you're fairly confident with HTML, you can edit the HTML to use your own logo or banner or link. For example, our own Web site promoting the service is at http://www.abcdating.com (see the link "View US ads here").
- Optionally, you can further customize the service, for example, with your own logo, introductory text, and automatically select from which country(s) ads will appear. For example, our own ABC Dating has signed up to three sub-accounts, one of US ads, one of Canadian, and the other UK.
- And of course you'll also need to design your own page promoting the service, or add a link to One and Only on one of your existing pages.
- People won't sign-up with One and Only unless they find your Web page, and click on your link to them. So it is important that your page and the link is seen by as many people as possible. If you already have a popular Web site, this might not be a problem, otherwise you are going to have to promote your site on a regular basis.
- When someone clicks on a One and Only link on your Web page, they are taken to One and Only's Web site. Since the link includes your account details, anybody whose signs up is credited to you.
- At any time you can check how your account is fairing. An example is show in the Table, below. On each day (see the date column), it shows the number of people who visit the One and Only Web site from your site (Visitors to Site), the number that actually sign-up (Net Subscriptions), and the percentage of subscriptions (Subs per 100 Visits). And of course it tells you how much your account has earned from new subscriptions (Subscription Term) and renewals, the amount of cash you get from each (Fee per Sub), and your total payout this month to date.
- One and Only also have a "Top 100" list which shows how much cash is earned by the Top 100 affiliates. It's interesting to see how much you need to earn to make the list, and how much can be earned. The Top affiliates earn several thousand dollars per month!
- We've been with One and Only since Sept 1997, running a dating Web site (see www.abcdating.com). We expect that people who visit the site are interested in the service, and are quite likely to click on the link to One and Only. If you run a different kind of Web site (eg. Train Spotting News), then you can expect less people to be interested. ABC Dating has placed banner ads on general Web sites, and receives about one visitor per 400 banner ad displays.
- About half the people who visit ABC Dating click on the link to One and Only.
- Less than 1% of the people who click-thru to One and Only sign-up. We know that other Web site may only get as little as a ¼% sign-ups.
- By setting up multiple sub-accounts with One and Only, we are easily able to track the success of any particular link. We have a dedicated account and Web site for UK residents (www.abcdating.co.uk), and another Web site for US an Canadian residents (www.abcdating.com), each with a separate account.
- The UK and US Web site do equally well, about ten times better than the Canadian one.
- The monthly revenue generated from One and Only is shown in the chart (below). In our very first month, we earned about £23 ($40), and after nearly two years, are averaging £500 ($820) per month. At this time, ABC Dating receives about 300-600 visitors per day.
- I believe we earn well above the average for One and Only affiliates, but we do put in above average effort in promoting the site. We appear in the One and Only Top 100 list, and regularly reach the Top 20 (we're listed as Borehamwood, Herts).

Our One and Only Revenue

- You have to promote your site regularly in order to get good traffic, and a fair number of click-thrus to One and Only. We spend about an hour per week.
- Checks from One and Only arrive each month in US Dollars. If you are based outside of the US, expect your bank to charge you a £6-£12 ($10-$20) service charge to convert the check into your local currency.
- Payment arrives regularly around the 8th of the following month, ie, about a week after finishing the month.
- Occasionally, One and Only run bonus programmes to help you try and boost your income. In January, they were offering to double your monthly income if you could increase your traffic by 15%, and maintain your conversion ratio (ie. if you were getting one sign-up per 200 click-thrus, to at least maintain this ratio). Plus they paid $20 bonus per sign-up over the number from the previous month. We did very well!
- One and Only takes care of all the payment facilities and all the customer support. During all this time, we have never had to deal with a customer because of problems resulting from the service.
- One last "Good Bit" ~ I met my partner on One and Only, and we married in May 1999!
