I signed up today, after it suddenly hitting me that working from home is one of the few options left open to me. I can't say it was a pleasant moment, as I've actually had the next four years of my life planned out, and now that's all unravelling. One of my main interests currently, and one that I have been interested in for some time, is writing. Therefore, I'm logically thinking that writing for magazines, newspapers, and maybe working on a book might be a good idea for me. I've been writing stories for most of my life and it is somewhat of a passion of mine. I have already started working on a book and I love the thought of getting published one day. Even though I know a few people who have worked from home for a short period of time, I'd love all the help I can get! Feeling very out of my depth right now. :/ Any advice or suggestions would be welcomed. Thank you. |

As a Freelance Writer, I can tell you that the writing landscape has changed drastically over the past 10-15 years. The traditional writing markets are fading and re-surfacing on the internet. The biggest need is for writers who can produce QUALITY web content in the form of articles, reports and eBooks. However, knowing web format for the content is very important. If you want more information about my mentoring work with new writers, please feel free to PM me. Hope that helps - at least a bit. |

Victoria Hi Welcome: I would encourage you to take up Julie's offer. while I would not disagree that 'the writing landscape has changed drastically in the past ten to fifteen years' It wold be unwise to remove your gaze entirely from the Magazine Periodical Novel Hard Copy Market...So do both Take a look in any WH Smith Store and count the number of periodicals on anything from Sports to Fashion from the sublime to the bizzare. Can I suggest that you nip in to your local library and ask them for a copy of the Writers and Artists Year Book. It does not have to be the current edition (It comes out yearly) It lists information on all the periodicals and publishers worth printing. Some magazines no longer accept unsolicited work some still do...This book will tell you all the things that as a "Start Up Writer" needs to know. This book is worth its weight in gold... http://www.writersandartists.co.uk/ Good Luck Man Friday |

Thank you, to both of you. I have PMed Julie and will definitely check out my library. Can either of you recommend any magazines that would accept articles or stories from an unpublished author? I see that (though please correct me if I'm wrong) as the easiest place to start. |

I've just discovered I have the 2009 issue already. I'll have a good look through that over the next few days. I also live with someone who reads Womens Weekly, so I'll read through a some editions of that and see if they're publishing the kind of things I write. Thank you again for the advice. |

From experience, many years ago, when I was writing in the hope of getting published, I found I had to adapt to the style of the publication, something I struggled with, consequently I had no success. I then spread my search wider, and found mags etc. more suitable to my style of writing, and had a few of my articles published, (I was never any good at fiction) Just saying that you may have to adapt to what the customer wants, or you may have to look further for inspiration. |
