Helo
I just joined this forum. I am a mature student52 yrs old.I have difficulty finding work to supply my monthly out goings. A friend suggested we start an ironing service since we both enjoy ironing and we can devote 20 hours per week to the job, that was waht we could doing nursing for an agency during weekends.
Though i think it is a great idea everyone around us is saying the recession is not conducive to starting a small business.
One of my teachers used this qoute " any idea passes through three stages of reaction: ridiculous, controversial, and obvious."
I was inspired and challenged to think out of the box or give up my course. Any advice will be appreciated from anyone who has been her before thank you for helping albert

Hi Albert and welcome..

Quote = "The recession is not conducive to starting a small business"

I would think that the opposite of that could be true.

If you are able to start and build a business in 'hard times', then I would be inclined to agree with Axeman in that it is quite possibly the ideal time to go for it.
If you have the spare time anyway, what do you have to lose? Just make sure that everybody in your chosen area knows the business exists, and keep telling them, and make sure that you get your name about as much as possible.
I have to say that it is unusual for men to run an ironing service, but that might even be a good selling point - use it if you can.

I agree with the others, Albert. It's a great idea and a recession can be a good time to start a business. While some people are tightening their belts there are others who have really well paid jobs and since they are probably working very hard, they would welcome your service. Good luck and if I can think of any names I will post them - if you have any freesheets in your area that are distributed in affluent parts of town, a small ad might be good. Queenie

Albert,

You have most likely heard the espression that you have only one chance to make a good first impression. I think you are hitting the market at a very good time. Just think of the business you could get from the unemployed who need to look polished when they arrive at each interview.

Can you hand out flyers at your local unemployment office? Perhaps there is a work re-training center willing to hand out information to clients?

I have someone in my Wikaniko team whose main business is an ironing company in the Midlands and I think its grown to a sizable affair.

If you pm me Albert, I will forward you her details and she can perhaps give you some tips on how she started up

Hi Albert, there are at least two local ironing concerns in my area, and both have been going quite a while, so there is obviously a call for these services.
Starting a business anytime can be scary, I was sixty when I started my first one, I just thought if I don't do it now, I never will.
Three years down the line I'm now running three business' so I say, go for it. If not, you may live to regret it.

Linda

Hi Albert

Both Linda and I are very glad you have decided to sign up to Wikaniko and look forward to working with you.

We both live too far away to send our ironing your way but you never know - one business may help the other
