Hello everyone,
I am looking to advertise myself for data entry; typing; stuffing envelopes but I do not know how to get started.
I welcome any advice or signposts to where no doubt this type of question has been touched upon.
I have previously had a homeworking position with a company but unfortunately the trainers pulled out and my position was dissolved before I got going.
I have done much voluntary work including data entry and this would be my main area. I have some health issues which without going into detail mean I am on benefits until I failed a tribunal and now need paid work instead of voluntary.
However, when I am well I can work extremely hard over long hours especially if I have not had to travel.
I look forward to reading your responses.

Hi and welcome Datamikail.

First of all do a search on data entry and stuffing jobs here. You'll find that we don't think very highly of those types of opportunities.

The vast percentage turn out to be scams...especially stuffing envelopes.

Have a good look through this site and see if any opps stand out for you...click on peoples profile names for links to external websites.

Someone else will probably come along with advice as well.

Good luck.

You could search online using Freelance {Work} as your keyword: Freelance Work, Freelance Document Processing, Freelance Data Entry, Freelance Work Forums and Freelance Job Boards.

DO NOT use Business Opportunities, Work At Home or Work From Home as search terms. The majority of results could prove to be undesirable.

Thank you both for your responses. Interesting profiles btw.

I have also found that most if not all searches under those words I used at least appear to be rubbish. Like a few people on this forum, I was hoping to find some genuine opportunities but at least I now have a more realistic view of the bigger picture.

The only scam I have been hit by if I could call it that was paying for a list of survey sites many of which were not even applicable to someone living in the UK. I did contribute a lot to a legitimate survey site but they simply don't pay enough for it to be a realistic 'earner'.

I've been approached by a couple of MLM networks but the outlay put me off and with the first one, internet research showed up some worrying results. Similar to above though, the second was actually a legitimate business.

However, searching under 'freelance' variants has turned up some decent looking leads. These should keep me busy at least.

Thanks again,
dm

It has to be said that surveys are not an income stream, but on the other hand they are useful in that they can provide the occasional bit of extra cash (although some offer only vouchers) which can sometime come in handy, and who never ever needs a bit of extra cash?
Don't stop doing surveys because they don't provide a lot of income. Keep doing them, selectively, but just remember that they will simply give you a bit extra, and sometimes this might come just when it is most needed.

An "opportunity" indicates chance, like a gamble, that could go either way - you could gain a little or lose a lot.

A "freelancer" is a serious worker, an independent contractor, a sole proprietor. They work in a specialty industry or profession.

Please be aware that both types of searches will return a new phenomenon - the membership site. You, alone, need to decide if such a situation is workable. For now, just be aware that freelance sites usually have their Forums and Advice areas in a membership area that is not indexed by the search engines. You are able to access most information up front.

The opposite is true for opportunity sites. You might get a short *free* trial period of 3-14 days and if you forget to cancel, you will be paying a hefty membership monthly fee. Of course, these sites are moneymakers and they depend upon visitors to have very poor - or busy - memories!

I hope this helps. It's "trial-and-error" experience!

Hi Kenweston,

Thanks for that. I just looked on the survey site the other day and there was a quick (paid) survey so I started up again. I only get paid every £50 I earn on there but as you say and I fully agree, there ARE times when I really could have done with such an amount. Sadly most of these particular surveys are draw entries but I'm going to have another bash. One real issue I have with surveys is when it is written that it takes approximately 10-15 minutes and even when I go through them quickly it often takes double the time stated.

Hi again B2bscott,

Yes it does help very much as I have in the past taken on too much (for me) at once and then got a nasty reminder only when it was too late.

I appreciate the definitions too.

These days I am very hesitant on what I sign up to and will go over something many times before taking the plunge.

Initially I felt very much out of my depth on those freelance searches above. I have made a tentative start only in that I am looking at my Time Management and getting the idea firmly fixed in my head first. I guess I need to do some serious time familiarising.

Fortunately this procrastination is possible as my dire financial situation improved this week.

Unfortunately I have some unprofitable time consuming activities to work through.

The main thing though is that I am taking freelancing/homeworking very serious. It helps that I no longer feel I need to rush like I did a couple of weeks ago.

I had briefly looked at this site/forum several years ago but got some voluntary work which came with expenses and the occasional piece of paid work and this added to my welfare was okay for a while compared to what I had struggled on previously.

Thanks again,
dm

Of course, each person will have a different view on time management. This is not the most scholarly response you will ever receive, but I tend to favor "project management" where the time expended to accomplish a goal is justified by the end result.

If exploring the world of freelance work is a priority, then those "other activities" become secondary to your focus. Project management says that you dig until you find gold.
